7 FALL WARDROBE STAPLES THAT ARE WORTH BUYING IN 2026

Every fall, there's plenty of temptation to buy something new.

But the pieces that end up getting the most wear usually aren't the bold trends. They're the ones you reach for without thinking because they go with everything and always look good.

You don't need a completely new wardrobe this season. A few well-chosen pieces can make outfits you already own feel fresh again.

Here are seven staples I'd put at the top of my shopping list this fall.

1. Dark Wash Jeans

Dark wash denim is one of those pieces that never seems to let you down.

It looks more polished than faded blue jeans, works during the day or in the evening, and pairs with almost every colour you'll wear this season.

When you're shopping, skip heavy fading, rips, or distressed details. A clean, simple finish gives you far more styling options.

I love wearing dark wash jeans with loafers during the day and swapping them for ankle boots or heels later on.

They look great with:

  • loafers

  • ankle boots

  • retro sneakers

  • ballet flats

  • heeled boots

2. One Knit You'll Want to Wear Again and Again

Instead of filling your wardrobe with several sweaters, look for one that feels special.

Soft wool, cashmere, or other natural fibres usually keep their shape better and feel much nicer to wear.

Texture also makes a big difference. Ribbed knits, cable knits, or brushed finishes can make even the simplest outfit feel more interesting.

One thing I've learned over the years is this:

If I have to convince myself to buy it, I probably shouldn't.

The pieces I wear the most are always the ones I loved from the moment I tried them on.

3. A Jacket That Fits Your Everyday Life

A jacket can completely change an outfit.

The important part is choosing one that matches how you actually dress.

If you spend most of your week in the office, a blazer makes sense.

If your style is more relaxed, you might get much more wear from a barn jacket, a utility jacket, a knit jacket, or a short trench coat.

It's easy to buy clothes for the life we'd like to have. It's much smarter to buy for the life we already live.

4. Comfortable Flat Shoes

Some shoes spend more time in the wardrobe than on your feet.

Before buying a new pair, I always ask myself one simple question:

Will I actually want to wear these all day?

This fall, loafers, slim retro sneakers, and classic ankle boots are some of the easiest styles to wear.

They're comfortable, easy to style, and work with almost everything—from jeans and tailored trousers to skirts and dresses.

If one pair works with most of your wardrobe, you'll never regret buying it.

5. A Leather Belt

It's amazing what one small accessory can do.

A leather belt can completely change the shape of an outfit.

Wear it with jeans, tailored trousers, or over a blazer, cardigan, or coat to define your waist.

Simple designs with good-quality leather always get the most wear because they never compete with the rest of your outfit.

6. A Handbag You'll Reach For Every Day

Sometimes changing your handbag has a bigger impact than buying new clothes.

A structured bag with clean lines makes even simple outfits feel more put together.

When I'm choosing a bag, I look for three things:

  • enough space for my everyday essentials

  • comfortable straps

  • a shape I know I'll still like in a few years

Black, chocolate brown, burgundy, and taupe are colours I never get tired of wearing.

7. A warm Coat You'll Wear for Years

Your coat is probably the hardest-working piece in your wardrobe once the weather gets cold.

Since you'll wear it almost every day, it's worth taking your time before choosing one.

Think about your daily routine.

Do you walk everywhere? Drive? Commute by train?

The right length, fabric, and colour depend on how you'll actually wear it.

Neutral colours like camel, chocolate brown, navy, black, or grey are always easy to style and won't feel dated after one season.

Before You Buy Anything This Fall

Whenever I'm thinking about buying something new, I ask myself a few questions:

✔ Can I wear it with clothes I already own?

✔ Will I still enjoy wearing it next year?

✔ Does it fit my everyday life?

If the answer is yes, it's probably a piece I'll get plenty of wear from.

Building a wardrobe takes time.

The best closets aren't filled in one shopping trip—they grow little by little.

Adding one or two pieces each season is often enough to keep your outfits feeling current while staying true to your own style.

After all, the clothes you wear the most are rarely the loudest ones. They're the pieces that make getting dressed feel easy.
